Well today saw me trekking out in the warm and beautiful sunshine to Wakamiya Hachimangu Shinto Shrine,Kawasaki,Kawasakidaishi.It was an easy journey from Shinagawa on the keiyu line to Kekyu Kawasaki and then a short transfer to Kawasakidaishi.
Why might you ask was I heading out to a small little shrine seemingly in the middle of nowhere?? Well the pictures will say alot but I also will tell you a little!
The Penis Festival.Arguably one of the strangest festivals I have been to.(Not counting the festival in Malaysia called Thaipussan where Hindu devotees pierce thier bodies with countless sharp objects to thank the gods for the health and safety of a family member who had run into a little trouble throughout the year!I guess more about that later!!!)
Its a fertility festival by meaning but also it occured to me that it was a festival where you could come out as you like and free up your sexuality a little and have a damn good time.I found it strange that in a country where there are so many taboos ,you could bump into a festival like this! Pure penis on a stick.
Anyways what was even more interesting to me was the mix of old traditon and modern life that the festival presented! You could pray in the temple and then head to the candy stall to buy a pussy pop. You could watch the mikoshi meander thru the streets and then sit yourself down to a drinking cirlce with men dressed as women.You could write your wishes on a small pice of wood and hang it on the wishing wall and then go buy yourself a penis daikon in the auction.
Definately an expertience not to be missed ! Enjoy the pics!
